Gary Gygax, R.I.P.

Ok, you know I'm a geek, and yes, I played Dungeons and Dragons way, way back when it first came out, so I was saddened to see that Gary Gygax has died. He was 69.

My parents were convinced that it was an avenue to the occult. Tracks like this were given to me by concerned church members. The pastor actually came to my house to pray that the "spirits of witchcraft and false gods would be barred from this house by Jesus blood."

Or some shit like that.

That was probably the day that it first dawned on me that these people were fucking nuts.

Ahh, the good old days.

I raise my hand as a fellow geek from as far back as the mid-'80s. No one ever preached to me, fortunately. I've met a few folks over the years, however, who've lost sight of that line between the game and reality and probably needed the slap in the face.

My husband and I still play RPG's every week with two different groups. Our players range from 16 to 42 years old. It provides us an opportunity to socialize, eat fun food, and get our rid of aggressions and pressures in a way that won't mean getting a future visit from the police.

Do your kids play? If not, you could always awaken your inner geek and introduce them to the game.

Yes, I introduced my kids to it a few years ago, but only my oldest has the patience for the pencil and paper aspect of it.

The other 2 boys play WoW and several others on the computer, which is fun, but it will never replace the thrill of those early days, staying up until 4:00 in the morning to finish the dungeon.

the boys in my high school would never let me play, and I could not get any other girls to start a club. Bastards. *grumbles*

Dudettes, let me say - if we could have found a girl willing to play!!!!!!

Ouyangdan - Can you cast a spell on me? I needs me some spirits!!

Did you click on the track?

I started playing initially with my sisters after the older one bought the books. Since then, there has always been at least one other girl in the group besides me. I'd invite all of you to the game at our house, but there are 9 of us now (3 of us girls!) and nowhere left to sit in our living room floor.

Yes, and it makes kids kill themselves as they listen to Ozzy Osborne, too.

It made me do drugs and have sex with as many partners as I could find.

Or was that College?
